Green Waste

The organic farm system relies on the balance of nutrients in the soil to successfully produce crops for the rearing of livestock. To add to our soil nutrients we operate a Green Waste processing operation. We receive garden waste from all of the Denbighshire County Council tips and pass all of the waste through our industrial shredding machine. The waste is then piled in large lines and composted to about 65 degrees centigrade for 12 months, decomposing the waste, drawing out its nutrients and killing off any weed seeds. Farm yard manure can be added with the green waste to further enrich the compost.

We then spread it on the land in the spring and autumn this in turn increases the fertility of the farm in the most natural way, without the use of any artificial fertilizers.

The system also allows us to opperate an even more environmentally-friendly farm; all of our estate office and shop paper and cardboard waste is added to the compost to break down.

Did you know:

  • Green waste is fruit and vegetable waste from the kitchen and garden waste, like grass cuttings, hedge trimmings, weeds and dead flowers.
  • 1/3 of the average household bin is filled with green waste.
  • Green waste that is thrown away in the bin ends up being dumped in a landfill site.
  • Green waste in landfill sites takes up huge amounts of space and takes lots of journeys to get it there. When green waste decomposes (or rots) in a landfill site, it produces methane, which is a dangerous ‘greenhouse’ gas. It also produces chemicals, called leachates, which can pollute the local land and water.
  • Green waste can be recycled at home by using a compost bin or making a compost heap. The waste rots down, to produce a brown, crumbly soil-like material, which can be used as food for the plants in the garden, to make them grow better.
  • Green waste can also be recycled by using approved local schemes such as the one we run on the farm.
